In the heat of our standoff, we called other friends in our group who were at a different car rental company and learned they faced the same obstacle. Refusing to pay triple the cost of our rental in insurance alone, we walked to the side of the road feeling defeated. Fortunately, an employee of one of the rental car companies came to our rescue and drove us the three hours to La Paz in his own car.

Our adventure also included diving with sea lions later that week. After two hours of flying across choppy waves, wrapped in coats and towels to shield us from the winter wind, our boat finally slowed down. There is safety in numbers so even if you’re traveling alone, consider sticking close to other groups of travelers, particularly if it’s dark out or you’re in an unfamiliar area. If someone approaches you for money, directions, other types of help, or if they are hitting on you, look for other groups of visitors nearby and pretend to know them.

And after a day of long adventures in Todos Santos the thing to do is catch a sunset, of course. We sat down on a deserted stretch of sand, just a short walk from our house, and watched the waves roll out and come crashing back in with mesmerizing force, getting misted by sea spray.

We denied the insurance per my credit card agreement but came back to drop off it was back on bill for over a thousand for the week. My timeshare has their own company and will not rent anywhere else. To set ourselves up for success, we mostly relied on retired Canadians who we learned are absolutely all over the place in Baja California. They drive their RVs down from copyright to escape the frigid northern winter and make their way to Baja, bouncing between various beaches and campgrounds.

Baja California is as safe for female travelers – if not safer – than many other destinations in Mexico and here Latin America. Still, women need to exercise more caution than men, so even though there is never any excuse for catcalling, harassment, assault, or rape, it’s in our best interest to take additional steps to avoid unwanted attention and inappropriate behavior.
